Green Hydrogen Blending Project, Highlights

The foundation stone of this joint project of NTPC and Gujarat Gas Limited was laid by PM Modi on 30 July 2022. This project was completed in record time.

This project is designed to supply H2-NG (natural gas) to households in Kawas Township in Adityanagar, Surat.

This green hydrogen blending system is produced by water electrolysis using electricity from an already installed 1 MW floating solar project.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved the blending of 5 per cent of green hydrogen with piped natural gas, which will be done phase-wise up to 20 per cent.

Benefits of Green Hydrogen Blending

When mixed with natural gas, green hydrogen reduces carbon emissions while keeping the net heating content the same. A select few countries like the UK, Germany and Australia have achieved this. Such an effort will help bring India to the centre of the global hydrogen economy.

Such an initiative will reduce India’s hydrocarbon import bill, and also India will emerge as an exporter of green hydrogen and green chemicals in the coming times.

What is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is produced by splitting H2O into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced from renewable energy or low-carbon power. It is very different from both grey and blue.
